First Communion

Welcome

Holy Communion is one of the greatest gifts God gives to the Church. In this meal, Jesus Christ comes to us through bread and wine with forgiveness, grace, and new life. Communion is more than a symbol or remembrance. Lutherans believe that Christ is truly present in this meal and that through it God strengthens our faith and our relationship with one another.

What Is Holy Communion?

Holy Communion, also called the Lord's Supper or Eucharist, is one of the two sacraments recognized by the Lutheran Church. A sacrament is a sacred act instituted by Christ that combines God's Word with a physical element.

In Holy Communion:

• Bread and wine are received together with God's promise.
• Jesus Christ is truly present in the meal.
• We receive forgiveness of sins.
• Our faith is strengthened.
• We are united with Christ and with one another.

Holy Communion is one part of the larger worship service and connects us to Christians around the world and throughout history.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church has been a beacon of faith in Hartland since 1867, even before the village was established. Beginning as St. Martin’s, early members gathered near what is now Capitol Drive, worshiping in multiple languages and building a strong foundation of community. Renamed in 1935, Our Savior’s continues to grow—expanding ministries, embracing new spaces, and faithfully serving a changing world.
